iPhoto Review and Overview

February 1, 2009

Hey everybody, as most of you know I purchased iLife 09 the day it was release, and I have been playing around with all the applications. Today I’m going to show you iPhoto 09.

iphoto-1

Faces: Not only do you have events, but now we have “Faces”. I really like this feature. its a great way to organize your photos, because it allow you to organize them by the people that are in them. For example, if you wanted a good picture of your mom for her birthday card, faces really comes in handy.

Interface

iphoto-2

The interface features a cork board with “Snap Shots” of all of your people. Also you get the skimming feature included in events. It is very nice, clean and easy to use.

Using Faces

iphoto-3

Above is what faces looks like when adding pictures to a person. Obviously, i am not that person on the right, so i double click to let iPhoto know that is not me. However i am on the left, so i let iPhoto know that’s me. Doing this allow iPhoto to get smarter at identifying people. The Face identifier is pretty good, but you get occasional mishaps like this.

Entering Peoples Names

iphoto-4

In the picture above, my whole family is named, except for one, my brother. It is very simple to add him.

iphoto-5Simply Click on the “unknown face” and start typing the name, iPhoto finds all the people in your faces library, and suggests names.

Adding A New Face

iphoto-6In the photo above, iPhoto did not detect my brothers face, so to add it, i simply click add new face, put a box around my brothers face, and then name the face. Its that Simple!!!

Down Sides:

iphoto-7This new iPhoto is amazing, but it has its downsides. The face detector does not detect pets faces, but i have heard that people have taught iPhoto to detect their dogs faces, but currently it is not a listed feature. Also, we get the occasional cloud looking like a face, or tree looking like a face, but those are minor. My biggest complaint no bulk select for a NO. When iPhoto feeds back results on who it thinks people are in photos, there is a bulk Yes but no bulk NO.

Overall Faces is an amazing new way to sort photos.

Places

Just like faces, now we have places. Places allows you to sort your photos by location.

Interface

iphoto-8If you know Google maps, on iPhone or computer, you know how to use places. The interface is very easy and clean, just like faces. With two view (World and List) you can Look at photos generally and specifically

Simply click a pin, and click the arrow to see the photos from the location.page-1

Downsides

This does not apply to everyone, but people with older cameras like me have to go in and name each place. What does that mean. It means i have to get a new camera! =D

Overall the new Places Feature is GREAT!

Other features.

Facebook and Flickr:

I have not really tested these out, but they are great add ons to iPhoto if you use either service.

Themed Slide shows:

These are great to show family members. They look amazing, and are very nice. The themes are great, and i think everyone will love this feature.

That is about it. I know i did not fully cover everything, but i covered most stuff.

Thank You Everybody!

Alex

iPhone 2,1

January 30, 2009

cc: http://thecreativeone.tv/

Hello Tech World,

As many of you guys speculated, the new iPhone firmware reveals code for a next model.  As some of you thought, the iPhone 3G doesn’t appear to be the last iPhone for Apple.

In the newly released firmware (2.2.1), it shows a description of the 2,1.  As Apple has used before, the format of labeling iPod touchs and iPhones.

The original iPhone was labeled “1,1″, while the iPhone 3G was model “1,2.” The iPod touch has already moved on to the 2,1 label as the second generation and was released recently during September’s music event.

Less is known for the iPhone “2,1″, however, since the iPod touch recieved such a major upgrade during the advancement from first generation iPod touch to the second generation, it is safe to assume that this will be the same for the iPhone.

P.A. Semi has been working on iPhone chips since last spring, and other evidence has surfaced indicating that Apple might be planning to upgrade the iPhone’s graphics sometime in the near future. -CNET NEWS

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller implied that the iPhone upgrades were in the routine of upgrading every June/July, however, this doesn’t always prove consistant since Macworld’s date didn’t follow the regular product cycles we were expecting.  So bottom line, hopefully, another iPhone release is on tap.

Mac Mini

January 20, 2009

Now lets get this started simple. Apple. MacWorld. Disipointment? Hold on, Apple fans were come by with a wicked slap in the face when Apple showed no new hardware changes, other than the expected MBP 17″. I know this, Apple can’t afford to ” WOW” you every single year with new products like Aluminum Macbooks, or an iPhone 3G.

The Mac Mini was one thing I really hoped Apple would boast a move on. Here is some background info on the Mini: Released in 2005, with a G4 RISK Chip, later upgraded to Intel based in 2007. Since then, we have not seen an update. Last time I checked that would be 4 years (about).

Some things I think Apple might put into the Mac Mini (If ever bumped):

  1. Aluminum Casing
  2. Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz+ or Intel Atom processor
  3. Standard: 250GB HDD / 128GB SSD option w/ 2GB RAM
  4. Standard: SuperDrive
  5. Price: Starts @ $699 (Although $599 ROCKS)
  6. BYOKM Comes w/ keyboard and mouse
  7. PCI expansion capable

So, those are just some of my wishes for the Mac Mini. Then again, Apple may forget about it, drop it or never bother upgrade it. What are your opinions on a new Mac Mini? Drop a comment!

Epic Disappointment

January 20, 2009

Hello good people, like any good youtuber I subscribe to the people who I feel are the most knowledgeable in the field of Apple (some of which are writers on this site and you should subscribe to them too). Most of these people I subscribe to host live web streams from time to time which I attempt to catch every single one. However there are times where I am away from my macbook and I can’t catch the web stream (like Alex’s stream on Friday). Luckily for me, iTunes has a UStream application for the iPod Touch. So I immediately downloaded the free app and synced my Touch atempt . But to my disappointment the application did not work! I was furious and speechless and went straight to google for the answer. I later found out that the UStream app only works on the 2nd generation iPod Touch. This only makes me wish that my parents waited 3 weeks before buying an iPod Touch for my birthday. I wish Apple would allow you to exchange a 1st generation Touch for a 2nd generation one. However Apple likes to swim in the deep end of the pool and likes to be cheap. I guess the purpose of this post to express my hatred for Apple not adjusting to the economy. But other than this one incident I love Apple =D.

Is Jailbreaking an iPod Touch or iPhone Really Worth It?

January 19, 2009

Hello good people, often I question if I should jailbreak my iPod Touch or not. Sure I will enjoy and appreciate the hardware more but I’m not sure if the reward outweighs the risk. The term “jailbreaking”, refers to hacking past the security and the internal system Apple has set up in the iPod Touch or iPhone. Jailbreaking the iPod Touch or iPhone allows for 3rd party applications to be put on the device for free. For example, an application like Super Monkey Ball that costs $6 in App Store could be put on the iPod Touch or iPhone for free. The application would be called something different like Super Ball Game or something along those lines and would have  the exact same game play. In addition to free applications, jailbreaking also allows for customization on the hardware that couldn’t be done on a non-jailbroken Touch or iPhone. Changing the icons, the background behind the applications screen, and the little arrow-in-a-box that you slide to unlock the device are just some of the many customization possibilities. Although everything listed above might convince you jailbreak your iPod Touch or iPhone, but you might want to know about the risk before you go to YouTube and search how to jailbreak your iPod Touch or iPhone. Jailbreaking your iPod Touch or iPhone voids the warranty on the selected device. Void the warranty means that if something were to happen to your iPod Touch or iPhone, Apple would not be responsible nor have to replace it free of charge. While jailbraking, people  have completely frozen their device to a point where it can’t process anything, not even if its plugged into a computer, iHome, or anything else. Most people say there’s a million in one chance you will “brick” your iPod Touch or iPhone, but if your anything like me, you are always that one. That seems to be the only risk to jailbreaking your iPod Touch or iPhone.  Other then messing up my $400 1st generation iPod Touch, there was another thing that stopped my from jailbreaking it. My friend Chris had his iPod Touch jailbroken and he had an application called iPhysics on it. I immediately fell in love with the application and needed to have it. However for months I went without the application, craving it every time I used my iPod Touch. Eventually I decided that I was willing to take the risk and jailbrake my iPod Touch. But right before I did I went through the app store and to my surprise they had an application called Touch Physics. I immediately paid for it (99 cents) and synced my iPod Touch. This was the exact same game but with a different name, so I decided not jailbrake it after all. The bottom line is that Apple developers are surly but slowly catching to the 3rd party applications so jailbraking it for the 3rd party applications is just a waste of time. However I don’t think Apple will be coming out with an application that will let you customize all the features on the iPod Touch or iPhone any time soon. So if that’s something you want to do, go for it. But question if jailbreaking your iPod Touch or iPhone really worth it. The easiest way to answer that questions is with another question. Am I willing to pay $400 again if something goes wrong?

iPhone Nano Rumors

January 19, 2009

Hello good people, I’m Matt, the new blogger guy for Alex. If you guys have an questions feel free to contact me.

Twitter- http://twitter.com/Fisher12

Youtube- http://youtube.com/MacOSXTutorials12

Surely if your current with all the Apple news you have heard about an iPhone Nano. Over the past few months this possible new hardware has caused much controversy throughout the Apple community. Is it possible? Is it probably? Here are pros and cons to an iPhone Nano.

Pros:

Affordability- Many people won’t buy an iPhone because it is very expensive. However, having an iPhone Nano would lower the price making it more affordable more people, especially in this economy.

Size & Weight- Although the iPhone is thin and lightweight, some people think that the iPhone is just too tall and too wide for them to use as a phone. The iPhone Nano would definitely be not as wide and probably not as tall. It also would be lighter thus meeting the needs of everyone who is sceptical about purchasing an iPhone.

iPod- Some people don’t need all the features/ applications that are available with an iPhone. Some people would just be happy if they had internet, mail, music, and phone all in one. Having an iPhone Nano would allow people who don’t want nor need the extra add-ons that are possible with the iPhone allowing them to focus on the music and video instead of applications.

Cons:

Smaller Screen- A smaller screen would mean more problems. For instance, how would one type on a screen that cant fit 26 English characters along with other numbers and symbols. Along with typing, viewing web pages and watching videos wouldn’t be as enjoyable see them on a small screen.

Applications- On iTunes the applications are formatted to fix a certain resolution specifically made for the iPhone screen. If there was an iPhone Nano, there would either need to be some sort of formatting formula in the iPhone Nano (which would take up space) or a new App Store would need to be created just for the iPhone Nano.

Rumors are still flying around the iPhone Nano. It seems there is 50/50 chance that they might or might not be one. Apple hasn’t released an information regarding the iPhone Nano and with co-founder and CEO, Steve Jobs taking a medical leave, it seems the truth behind the iPhone Nano will be in the “Apple vault” for a while.
